- "The Neck Pillow"
Such works fill me with hope
about the future of progmetal and of music in general. No matter what the
major consortium labels will try (e.g. the underhand agreements for keeping
the CD prices high, which convinced me totally about the importance, the
rights and the power of mp3), as long as there are undergound bands producing
such works,
have no fear. This is the second album of these Germans and I can say that
it's much better than you might believe such an album can be. Would you
like a mixture of Pink Floyd-ish solo guitar, Rush-y riffing, Genesis-like
keyboards and many many more? I guess so! Fortunately though, the result
is surely not retro progrock. Maybe because of the (very successful, especially
if we're talking about self-financed CDs) sound production, or because
of the electronic parts they use, or maybe because of the structure of
the songs (lengthy, with many different parts, moving from technical to
totally atmospheric). The only thing that disappointed me, is that, despite
the interesting concept (talking about a difficult relationship), the lyrics
are rather plain and sometimes out of the song's rhythm (common characteristic
for German groups, still not an enjoyable one though). The whole atmosphere
of the album is rather dark and intent - and the melodies found here will
easily draw your attention. If we should talk in progmetal terms, I would
say that they remind me of Soul Cages, Sieges Even, late Fates Warning
and maybe a bit of early Depressive Age. Noteworthy, too, that the artwork
is exceptional and that humour, even if it's bitter sometimes, is something
they don't lack (just listen to the last song!). I would recommend to them
to send this CD to a prog or a metal, in general, record label. They should
sign immediately, but until then, you have the chance to get in touch with
their music now.
