X - "Universe"
I don't have much to say
about this release, except that I expected much more. You see,
both Derek Sherinian and Tony MacAlpine are well known and talented musicians
and the cooperation of them sounds almost as a super project. Too bad that
their album sounds so typical. You can't blame them for inconvenience.
Excellent sound production, extremely good technique and playing skills,
impressive effects, nice artwork... But, you know, who needs one more album
that tries to impress us with technical playing, just to hide the lack
of real melodies and of feeling? If you're a collector of instrumental
progrock/progmetal albums, you should add this one to your collection.
Its references to Dream Theater and its complex arrangements can guarantee
that it won't annoy you. But if you're looking for music that comes straight
from the heart and is destined to go there, too, there are many superior
albums out there. Too bad.
