Platypus
– Ice Cycles
This
is the second Platypus album, featuring John Myung (Dream Theater),
Derek Sherinian (Planet X), Ty Tabor (King's X) and Rod
Morgenstein (Rudess Morgenstein, Dixie Dregs, Winger). What happens
when four musicians of such different musical backgrounds compose music,
is something that can not easily described in a review. What I can say
is that this mixture resulted to an album with solid sound and a variety
of beautiful songs. The final sound is influenced by bands of the 90s as
Alice in Chains, Soundgarden and progressive bands as our well-known
Dream Theater. After some more carefull listens you'll find Beatles
and other 'old-good' bands in Ice Cycles. The fact is that the band is
not "stuck" to its influences but the overall result sounds really experimental
and "fresh". It's definitely a band that pushes music boundaries and doesn't
afraid to be influenced by 90s rock. I'd definitely recommend it to any
fan of good experimental rock/metal music.
